Orgiva | The Dreamweaver

I went to a remote camping site in Orgiva, in the Alpujarra mountains in southern Spain with a friend and an acquaintance, a barbershop customer perhaps, who said he had bought a place and invited us to stay there.

When we got there, it turned out it was merely a small piece of land he owned and we’d be sleeping outside under the stars and we didn’t have as much as a sleeping bag or blankets.

I decided to go for a walk to see if I could find lodging and after walking around for about an hour, I gave up and returned to the campsite to see that there was indeed a cabin there but it was closed and there were roller shutters that closed off the main entrance.

I sent the guy a message and when he didn’t respond I decided to enter the house and try to sleep on the couch upstairs and keep warm any way I could. I had some shirts in my backpack I thought about covering myself with.

I decided to look downstairs to see if I could find a blanket and was shocked to see a number of beds occupied by nearly a dozen people---the oddest arrangement being three completely naked young women who looked like triplets sleeping in one small bed---who were obviously renting out the accommodation. I went downstairs and looked around to find a back room with even more beds and private luxury sleeping pods.

I surmised this guy was running a hostel in the woods and raking in the money.

Seeing what appeared to be a free bed, I decided to take my chances and sleep for a few hours, at least until the sun came up when I would find my way to the train station and head back home.

Then I woke up.
